Cancer Nurses Day is more than just a date on the calendar - it's a moment to recognise and celebrate the incredible work being done by the 7,500 cancer nurses nationwide and champion their remarkable contributions to improving patient outcomes in Australia. With advancements in treatments and technologies, alongside shifting healthcare landscapes and workforce dynamics, it is more crucial than ever to recognise the work of cancer nurses and the pivotal role they play in the field of cancer care.
Why Get Involved?
Getting involved and celebrating Cancer Nurses Day is a fantastic way to recognise and acknowledge your team and the role they play, and show support for cancer nurses across Australia. Our theme for this year is ‘Strong, Skilled, Specialised’, because we want our workforce to be recognised for what they are: Strong in support, Skilled in practice and Specialised in knowledge.
Whether you're a fellow cancer nurse, healthcare professional, or consumer, your participation helps raise awareness, advocate for, and celebrate the remarkable individuals who make a vital difference to patient outcomes every day.

I would like to personally thank Dawn for all her incredible support and guidance in helping me to navigate my cancer journey including through some of the most difficult and challenging times of my life. She was always there to help me whenever needed and I am forever grateful for all her invaluable advice and expertise. I would not have coped with the cancer diagnosis and treatment as well as I did without her by my side very step of the way.
Why did you become a Cancer Nurse?
Being a Cancer Nurse is a rich and rewarding career choice. The diversity of roles and career progression opportunities, coupled with life long learning, gives you flexibility to define your professional journey while providing a meaningful contribution within the healthcare system.
Lebogang Thomy,
Clinical Nurse Consultant
Cancer care nursing is unique. You have multiple encounters with the patient and are often involved in their whole journey. Sometimes you're with the patient at diagnosis, throughout their treatment and then celebrating their remission; and sometimes you're supporting them and their loved ones through their palliative / end of life care.
I had a rewarding experience when providing end of life care to a patient when I was a graduate nurse. I was drawn into the multi faceted approach adopted to care. I felt it was an area where I could make a difference.
I enjoy improving the patient experience through the provision of individualised patient centred care - making what is often a very unpleasant situation more bearable for patients and their families.
I enjoy being part of a multidisciplinary team, working together with the patient and their significant others, to achieve what is important for each individual patient and be part of something bigger.
I love the challenge of the fast paced, dynamic, technical but very human side of caring for a person with cancer. Nursing is like that – innovative with infinite opportunities.
